永和兰亭禊饮集者四十二人，人各赋诗，自右军而下十一人，各成两篇，郄昙、王丰而下十五人，各成一篇，然亦不过四言两韵，或五言两韵耳。诗不成而罚觥者十有六人，然其间如王献之辈，皆一世知名之士，岂终日不能措一辞者？黄彻谓古人持重自惜，不轻率尔，恐贻久远之讥，故不如不赋之为愈耳。余则以为不然，盖古人意趣真率，是日适无兴不作，非若后世喋喋然，强聒于杯酒间以为能也。史载献之尝与兄徽之、操之，俱诣谢安，二兄多言，献之寒温而已。既出，客问优劣，安曰："小者佳。吉人之辞寡，以其少言，故云。"今王氏父子群从咸集，而献之诗独不成，岂不平日静退之故邪？
