法律援助是国家在司法制度运行上建立的因经济困难通过法律救济手段保障自身权利的公共法律服务体系。它最初的起源地是中世纪的英格兰。当时主要以欧美资本主义国家为先，从慈善法律援助体系开始，当时多由律师们自发提供法律服务，属于一种民间行为。而我国的法律援助建设始于20 世纪 90 年代，1994年初，广州市政府设立了我国首家法律援助中心“广州市法律援助中心”标志着中国开始实施的法律援助制度。法律援助是国家的责任、政府的行为,由政府设立的法律援助机构组织实施。它体现了国家和政府对公民应尽的义务。无偿的法律援助制度是国家建立的为经济困难公民和特殊案件当事人提供免费法律服务的法律制度，体现了“法律面前人人平等”的法治原则，是社会文明进步的重要标志。
法律援助工作大多是根据当事人的申请，指派律师为符合条件的公民提供法律援助，但是针对无固定生活来源的成年人、老年人、残疾人等特定群体，应为他们提供无障碍设施设备和服务。随着刑事法律援助工作的进行，对从事法律援助人员要求也更高，法律援助律师相比一般律师而言所承担的社会责任更高，从而相应的责任也就越高，要具备专业的法律知识，丰富的办案经验等。尽管目前我国的法律援助工作已经取得了一定的成绩，但仍然还存在着许多问题和不足，需要我们进一步深入研究问题症结所在，探讨问题解决办法。

It originated in Medieval England. At that time, mainly European and American capitalist countries took the lead, starting from the charitable legal aid system. At that time, lawyers spontaneously provided legal services, which was a kind of folk behavior. The construction of legal aid in China began in the 1990s. In early 1994, the Guangzhou municipal government established the first legal aid center in China, "Guangzhou Legal Aid Center", marking the beginning of the legal aid system in China. Legal aid is the responsibility of the state and the behavior of the government, which is organized and implemented by the legal aid institutions established by the government. It reflects the obligations of the state and the government to citizens. The system of free legal aid is a legal system established by the state to provide free legal services for citizens with economic difficulties and parties to special cases. It embodies the rule of law principle of "everyone is equal before the law" and is an important symbol of social civilization and progress.
Legal aid is mostly based on the application of the parties, and lawyers are assigned to provide legal aid to eligible citizens. However, barrier free facilities, equipment and services should be provided to adults, the elderly, the disabled and other specific groups who have no fixed source of life. With the progress of criminal legal aid, the requirements for legal aid personnel are also higher. Compared with ordinary lawyers, legal aid lawyers bear higher social responsibilities, so the corresponding responsibilities are higher. They should have professional legal knowledge and rich experience in handling cases. Although China's legal aid work has made some achievements, there are still many problems and deficiencies, which require us to further study the crux of the problem and explore solutions.
