Core selection
The first step in designing a sandwich structure is to
choose a suitable core configuration for the intended
application. The core of a sandwich structure can be
of almost any material or architecture.1 Here, the base
material (the material of which the core is made from)
has been already selected. The selected material is a
third-generation aluminum–lithium alloy, i.e. Al 2099
,and is identical for both core and face sheets.
Additional information on the material selection
was described by Molavitabrizi.15 Thus, the only
design variable would be topology. Since the goal of
this research is to develop a lightweight structure, only
low-density cores (cellular cores) are considered.
A typical classification of common manmade cellular
cores is shown in Table 1.
